VOLUME 1 – ISSUE 1
Greetings Beorken Fanatics!
Thank You for subscribing to The Beorken Blog! We hope that you come to look forward to our newsletters and encourage your friends and loved ones to read along!
I think it is most appropriate to start at the beginning, the very beginning. Most of the locals are aware that Kansas City is known as the Barbecue Capital of The World! I have heard it said since I was little. However, how many of us know why?
This BBQ trend started here in the 1900’s. At this time Kansas City’s location centered around seven major meat packing corporations as well as the extremely and widely used Sante Fe and Union Pacific transit. Paired up with numerous livestock venues; Kansas City was immediately known as a hub in the US for a wide variety meats.
Henry Perry, said to be the founder of barbeque, made his mark in Kansas City in 1908 in our, still to this day, legendary 18th & Vine District. Henry’s style of slow cooked meats started a trend that as you know has become nothing short of phenomenal! It is said that Mr. Perry would sell slabs of ribs on pieces of news print for twenty five cents. What I would give to see this, barbeque at its finest!
Perry’s small vision rapidly soared with the cultural times. Hard times of The Great Depression, BBQ and Kansas City Jazz came together to put our city on the map. I would like to say that good music and good food have brought locals together for years!
Due to rapid growth Perry invited Charlie & Arthur Bryant in on his –not-yet-known- small fortune. After Henry Perry died in 1940 these two brothers teamed up, re-named the business Arthur Bryant’s and moved to 18th & Brooklyn where the famous restaurant still remains.
Many have succeeded in Kansas City since then and continued on the great traditions of our city. Only to name a few: Gates & Sons, Curt’s Famous Meats, Fiorella’s Jack Stack and KC Masterpiece. Ask any local and you will discover dozens of favorites or smaller mom & pop restaurants. Kansas City has what it takes to satisfy anyone’s barbecue pallet.
Beorken Sauces & Rubs is humbled to come into such an over saturated market and receive the kind of attention we have. As with Henry Perry the idea and concept of our product started with just a dream, in a home kitchen; just feeding the family. Because of the incredible foundation that we rest on here in Kansas City there is no doubt that we will continue to thrive and enjoy each endeavor we encounter.
WHAT’S TO COME?
Our goal with this newsletter is to educate our consumers and encourage you all to get excited and involved with the rich history of barbecue, and ALL that comes with it! From time to time we will talk exciting history of our incredible country, share story’s of our endeavor’s and contribute recipes and ideas to your kitchen.
If you are not aware Team Beorken participated in the Great American BBQ this season. This was Beorken’s first introduction to the competitive world of barbecue. With a goal of simply getting the product name out there we placed fourth out of ninety eight entries in the People’s Choice category! We couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome of this event.
We have since then teamed up to sponsor with various corporations to merely get our feet wet in this raging field. To say the least we have our eyes on eleven local BBQ competitions between now and late November that we cannot wait to get in on.
